About us and our suppliers
Pat and Martin Whitehead set up wine-encore.com in 2001 to monitor offers available from supermarkets and High Street multiples. Site traffic has grown substantially during the three years we have been running and we have received a great deal of feedback from our visitors. Much of this has commented that the supermarkets have now become too brand orientated and that they stock comparatively few wines from smaller producers and, if they do, these wines are rarely promoted.
As tastes evolve and confidence grows, people want to try something a bit different; more unusual wines and styles from smaller producers - the sort of wine you buy on holiday but can't find back home. The larger mail-order companies have amazing introductory offers but they often include a couple of pretty awful bottles and re-ordering is often a problem because the wines you liked are no longer available or are much more expensive than their price in the introductory offer. So our feedback tells us that there are a lot of disgruntled wine buyers about and that's why we have set up wine-encore-shop.com!
We decided that we could offer something new by focusing on more individual wines not generally available in supermarkets, the High Street or by mail-order, and by being totally up-front on price by pricing them in our wine list at the lowest possible price.
We have sourced our wines from Great Western Wine and Roger Harris Wines to bring you great value and eminently drinkable wines from around the world.
Great Western Wine's philosophy is to look for talented, young up-and-coming individual wine makers whose wines reflect the character and passion of the people that make them and show the true style and characteristics of the area in which they are grown. Great Western Wine recently won the Which? Wine Guide South West Merchant of the Year Award for the third year running, in recognition of the quality of their wines.
Roger Harris Wines is simply the best importer of Beaujolais in the country and this is confirmed by their recent award as Specialist Beaujolais Merchant in the 2004 International Wine Challenge. Like Great Western Wines, Roger Harris sources wines from small-scale growers who are infinitely more concerned with quality than quantity.
The technical side of our sites is run by DAL who have supported us through thick and thin since the early embryonic days in 2000.
